So, I hear that most of you don’t know much about the current political crisis in my wonderfully tiny home country of Honduras. I hear that clarification – for those of you who are force-fed the tripe CNN offers and more specifically, for those of you who willingly eat it – is desperately required. I’ve heard many things about Honduras over the last few months and I don’t doubt some of you have too. However, I’m going to continue as though you are all blank slates concerning the current Constitutional Crisis in Honduras.
A word of warning: this article explains not only what happened but also my very biased opinion on the events. This is not an objective piece of news at all but it is all based on what have come to be known as facts as well as the experiences of contacts I have still in the country.
Before we go on, I would like to make things easier for you and define the following words (ah, the joy of online dictionaries!):
- con⋅sti⋅tu⋅tion (noun) - The system of fundamental principles according to which a nation, state, corporation, or the like, is governed.
- ref⋅er⋅en⋅dum (noun) - The principle or practice of referring measures proposed or passed by a legislative body to the vote of the electorate for approval or rejection.

The Honduran Flag.
The Zelaya Presidency
José Manuel Zelaya Rosales was the democratically elected president of Honduras from the 27th of January, 2006 until his removal from office on the 28th of June, 2009. During his presidency, Zelaya – or Mel, as he’s known to the informed – faced unfavourable relationships with the media, an increase in drug-related violence under his reign and numerous allegations of involvement in corruption scandals. To give the man credit – as every man deserves – he did fulfil some of the promises he made to Honduras during his campaign. However, those fulfillments pale in the wake of the crisis he caused when he attempted to change the Honduran Constitution.
Since his ousting, some supporters have referred to Zelaya as a modern day Prometheus, "a titan who was punished by the almighty gods for having given humanity the capacity to create fire. This generated a conflict, which ended with Prometheus’ banishment and exile."
